One of the first and most important
assessments concerning any emergency situation
is to determine if the scene is safe for first
responders to safely gain access to the patient
and/or patients. If it is too dangerous the
first responder may have to wait for rescuers
who have the appropriate protective equipment
to facilitate safe access, treatment and
extrication of the patient.
We need to understand this one
fact, "Dead hero's cannot save lives!" The
concept of recognizing and keeping a scene safe
is an intricate part of all of our training
programs.
