Burns can occur as the result of
exposure to heat, chemicals, electricity and
radiation. Each of these burn sources can
produce different degrees or depths of burns.
These are referred to as first, second and
third degree burns.
Treatment is based upon the type, depth and
extent of body surface and location of the
burns. Internal respiratory burns can also take
place when victims inhale or breath in super
hot air, smoke and other gases.
Burn care is an important component to any
first aid training program due to the variety
of potential burn sources and the seriousness
of burn injuries.
